Northern Ontario School of Medicine( East Campus)

Northern Ontario School of Medicine is a large institution offering medical education and world class care. The East campus is situated in Greater Sudbury in the north-eastern part of Ontario district of Canada. It is connected to Ottawa and Toronto through the Trans-Canada highway. It caters to the medical education need of the whole region of northern Ontario.
Set up in 2005, the school is a joint venture between Lakehead university and Laurentian University. The East campus especially is under the auspices of the Laurentian university. The school ensures that by the time an individual graduates, he/she spends 40% of their time in aboriginal and rural settings. The East campus boasts of a state of the art research laboratory.

Course Details:  

The school provides a 4 year MD program. However the East campus is primarily engaged in postgraduate courses in Anesthesia, Maternity Care ,Emergency Medicine, and enhanced medical skills. Due to close knitting between the Lakehead university and Laurentian University, the courses are scattered throughout the campuses and include compulsory work amidst rural and aboriginal communities.

Admission Procedure:  

The prerequisite for admission is a 4 year undergraduate degree or equivalent degree in any discipline. Preference is given to local and aboriginal applicants. A minimum CGPA of 3 out of 4 is required. Fourth year students can apply provided they finish all requirements before applications are opened. Post evaluation of applications, individuals are called for personal interview. A final score taking into account the application credentials and assessment on interview are taken is then done. Candidates who do not qualify are intimated via mail. Transfers are not allowed and admission may be denied if a background check and health record check comes back negative.

Accommodation facilities  

There are seven different facilities to accommodate students. From Co-educational dormitories at the 171-seater Huntington's Residence to single students residences which houses 396 students, options catering to every need are available. Most of the facilities are on Student Street. The first floor walkway is the same for most buildings and has health services, laundry and other facilities. The application form can be downloaded from the Internet and should reach the residence office on email with time to spare.
